Born in St. Moïse, Québec in 1893 he
joined the Royal 22nd in 1916. Though without previous
military experience he was soon promoted corporal and earned the
Military Medal. On 19 June 1918 his Lewis Gun section was in action near
Arras
when the enemy attacked, and as soon as their artillery barrage
lifted about fifty Germans advanced with drawn bayonets. Corporal Kaeble
jumped over the parapet with his Lewis gun, firing one magazine after
another at them. Although hit several times he kept shooting until he
fell back into the trench, mortally wounded, and discharged his last
cartridges at the now retreating Germans. His last words, shouted to his
wounded companions, were: “Keep it up, boys; do not let them get
through! We must stop them!” He was awarded the VC posthumously
for this gallantry.
