Soldier and administrator, Isaac Brock was born at St. Peter
Port, Guernsey in 1769, and died in the Battle of Queenston
Heights on 13 October 1812. After service in the West Indies and
battle experience in
Holland
under Sir John Moore he came to
Canada
in 1802 as the senior officer of his regiment, the 49th
Foot. He proved an effective military administrator, being
responsible for strengthening the fortifications of Québec. In
1811 he became administrator of
Upper Canada, the lieutenant governor, Francis Gore, being on leave in
England
. When war with the
U.S.
began in 1812 Brock seized the initiative and captured
Michilimackinac. Then, although greatly outnumbered, he forced
the surrender of
Detroit
. Later that year he was killed leading his troops in
dislodging another American invasion attempt at
Queenston
Heights. His skill and energy saved
